First Gehry got the Basque bug. Now Foster + Partners have put their stamp on the region and unveiled their spectacular design of Faustino Winery in Ribera del Duero – 200km north of Madrid. Mapped out like a helicopter’s propeller, one part of the building sits underground which makes for prime cool-room wine making conditions. An opposing wing is totally exposed, kicking off the fermenting phase. The roof of the third wing meets with a road, where grapes are delivered and then crushed. Taking up 12,500sq meters, the winery has the capacity to churn out one million bottles a year. This is one well working three-way relationship.
